Luz Jeanett Rodriguez. MSc
Luz started in the lab for her project understanding how marine microbes are adapted to use different algal carbon sources. Luz will understand what CAZYmes are encoded in those microbes to synergistically metabolise them.

We are hiring two PhDs:
1. Soda Lake metagenomes and high alkaline environments as gold mining resource of industrial CAZymes. In this project, we are looking to discover novel CAZYmes from alkaline environments using (meta)genomic analysis and wet-lab skills cloning and exploring the molecular determinants of these enzyme classes.
Deadline: 3rd December 2025.
2. Integrating Metagenomics and Microfluidics for Rapid Discovery of Novel Enzymes from Extreme Environments. In this project, our aim is to develop and apply a microfluidic-based metagenomic platform for the rapid discovery and characterization of novel enzymes from extreme environments contaminated with high concentration of metals from former coal mine industries in North-East.
Deadline: 5th January 2026.
The lab just moved to Durham University.
We are so excited because the lab just moved to the Biosciences Department at Durham University. If you are interested to join the group, be in contact with Jose. 01/09/2025

GRC Conference 2025
CAZYmes for glycan conversions
Andover, NH, 20-25th July 2025
The lab recently attended the GRC conference "Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes for Glycan Conversions", Andover, NH, 20-25th July 2025.
Jose presented a research talk about part of the research currently in the lab and Molly, Ellie and Alice presented their posters about their PhD projects.
